Today I was going to walk through the Wiehegebirge. But I did not. My gps route planner showed the fastest route, 28 km, so that's what I was going to do. When planning in advance, many months ago, I copied a description of the Wittekindsweg Töddenweg, Handelsweg, Wiehenweg. I relied on the distances listed there. But though those pathways are likely to be particularly beautiful, they are not the shortest way. And if beauty has to determine my route, I'll never reach Cape North before winter. So here and there I cut off. On the other hand, I also sometimes get lost a bit, so on balance the day distances often are as long as I had planned anyway.
Because it was difficult to go to bed early, because the night was abbreviated one hour because of summer time change, I got up a little later. Each time again last night Internet disappeared. Importing the pictures in my blog is very time consuming anyway, at least 30 to 60 min., But if wifi then disappears every so often, saying "default", I'll never be able to go to bed.
For dinner I had asked Schweinsbraten again, assuming that it contained a real bone for Tosca. So that turned out not to be the case.
Tosca, like usual, remained quiet in the basement where she was given a place on a mat.
I agreed for tonight in Wiehen-Therme hotel Struck Meijer in the hamlet of Reinberg in Hüllhorst (Lübeck). The price was comparable to the B & B and to the chambres d'hotes in France, but here I also would get a spa with swimming pool, sauna, all included. Dog no problem. I'm glad I do not have to ask about a horse.
Rain all day, sometimes cats and dogs. No sun at all. I walked mostly along the road, sometimes without sidewalk or bicycle path, which is sh.. . Occasionally I could give Tosca her freedom, which she used to chase a group of birds, hundreds of yards away in the field, or a pheasant. But otherwise I mostly had to hold her, which is not really pleasant. Unbelievable how such an animal can walk all day in the rain, with no signs of fatigue or cold and then use every opportunity to make another charge after an alleged victim. For dog lovers: In the morning Tosca gets kibble, in the afternoon a little nash and in the evening the whole meal. With my rain pants and poncho and the rain in the back, I'll stay dry and warm, apart from some condensation inside the poncho. Even though the weather is a crying shame, some villages here are very pretty anyway. Cozy little central square of half-timbered little houses around a nice church. Looks a little bit like Alsace in France.
Like yesterday I had my breakfast of several sandwiches with lots of butter in a bus shelter. I had not bothered about drinking. Having a break somewhere also would be an opportunity to purr my mobile phone from one of the many pockets in my clothing. A text message from my home village Vijlen. Hey, that's nice. Makes my lonely heart a little warm. She had compassion with me and knew maybe a place to stay somewhere in Northern Germany, at her sister's. Unfortunately I already passed that spot two nights ago and the answer to my question, if she has more sisters living near here, unfortunately was negative. I wanted to catch today's misery on the film, but did not have anough "sjoega" (is that Dutch?) (mental power) to do so. Battery of film camera empty. Of the cold? Now I even can not immortalize the misery of a lonely, drowning non-pilgrim, along the side of the road. I think of my brother, who this weekend celebrates his birthday, the fireplace at home, the half pies that are dropped at my office each Monday as left overs from the weekend. Why don't you just stop this nonsense? What's the use?
Never in my life I'll stop this! I said "A", so ... I already got rid of horse Leon. Now only dog Tosca still remains as difficulty factor to make my trip less easy and more appealing. Should I then get rid of her too? The book "10 little negroes" of Agatha Cristy, in which one by one the black persons get lost and disappear? Me going on alone? No, no softies here. In this depressing weather I had no desire to go to the various restaurants, which according to the billboards were located 400 m to the right, or 2 km to the left of the route. Each additional m is one too many. Damn, what was the address again that I had to go to in Hüllhorst? Normally I make a route description in the evening and put it into my pocket. Forgotten. I already had anough trouble getting my GPS, phone or other devices out of my clothes: wearing a poncho, two backpack straps over my poncho, rain. After checking all pockets the address of my shelter must be hidden in my backpack. So I had to lift that thing off my back again, after first fixing the dog to a tree. Therefore first looking for a dry place. You know: in Maastricht language there is a tune: tat 't toch verrek, gaank de kloete up ... (and repeated many times), meaning Who gives a damn, go to hell.. .I decided to have a break somewhere near my destination today, in Hüllhorst, for a coke and a coffee. That combination always gives me a lot of energy, my redbull, and I needed it pretty much at that moment. So that's what I did. Tosca tied under a roof, I ordered my energy boost in the Wirtschaft, searched for the address and then asked how I could reach it. At the house next door!
Fine anyway.
For Tosca they had no garage. She could stay with me in the room the lady at the reception said. OK. Very good. Pool and spa is closed on Sunday. Yeah, hey, making nice advertisement, kidding me and once I have booked my room, their attributes are not open. So that's the way it goes here. But I'm not all stupid. Tomorrow will be my revenge when at breakfast I 'll store for my and Tosca's lunch. Deh da, do doa (I tell you).
Now, in the evening, I get another pep call: hey Harrie, where are you? Where and when can we join you? We agree to meet after Easter. I expect Tuesday, April 7 in the evening to arrive in Springe, and then Wednesday, April 8 walk to the 26 km northerly Bad Nenndorf / Hagenburg or somewhere (this to inform Lee and Noel) . Then next, also on Wednesday, 08.04 Poggenhagen / Otter Hagen, Thursday 9/4 Fuhrberg, Friday 10/4 Celle, Saturday 11/4 Hermannsburg Sunday 12/4 Wietzendorf Monday 13/4 Soltau / Stübeckshorn, Tuesday 14/4 Undeloh. Wednesday 15/4 Handeloh / Buchholtz in der Nordheide. A few days later, Hamburg. Another route is also good to me, as long as it's on the way North to Hamburg. So, now quickly looking for shelter for tomorrow in Portowestfalica and also getting food and it's already 7.24 pm. In my home for tonight I see a poster with a bicycle or car route along all historic timber-framed sites, among others Lubeck, Peter Hagen, Stoltzenau, Nurenburg-Weser, Rothenburg, Bucholtz. Something for the future maybe.
The day is over. Beyond 10 pm. Actually I desperately needed to lay down, but first I call my esteemed ega (see if she really misses me), next my one year-older brother Jack, still for his birthday, answering text messages from my home village Vijlen, send a sms to Hannie in Spain, who advises me to put sanitary napkins under the painful backpack belt. I answered her that I prefer a lady holding her hand on my shoulder, under the back pack strap, but that's too difficult to organize. Who knows a candidate? SMS to Hoofdstraat, Mechelen. And thus, with all these contacts, a la-la day has been pimped a little again. Lodging for the next two days is settled: Haustiere nicht gestattet. Nevertheless they accepted me and dog Tosca anyway! Ha, ha. I also decided to shorten the route. I'm NOT going further East, to Porto Westfalica tomorrow, nor further East to Hameln, but instead I want to go from here directly to the North. Petershagen tomorrow, day after tomorrow Leese. This saves at least 2 days.
I have to stop.
