Today we made a day trip to Savary Island, a vacation island, with a very high dune, nice sandy beach and rather warm water. Far away sea otters, seals and always the white necked sea eagles. It was very nice and relaxed with little Sienna, with Danya’s friend Amanda and her partner, sun, ice cream. Not a real practice for my hike, but why should it be?
A few conclusions from the Sun Coast Trail: 18 km a day, up and down, often slippery rocky paths, or wet moisterous soil, everything soaked, is nice, but rather tiring. Specially if it rains and when you have too much luggage, partly because of the tent we didn’t use. During my ponyanddogtrip I’ll have to cover 25-30 km, each day, 6 days a week, one year long. I hope and I expectI’ ll get used to that after a few weeks, but the few blisters that I had after 2 days warned me, that I still need some extra practice. Moreover I start realizing that paths like this trail, with its slippery rocks , little moors, big fallen trees on the path, creeks and little bridges, trees between which Luka has to squeeze with all his luggage, are almost impossible for a horse. That would mean that I would have to leave Luka behind in Lapland, cause ther it’s the same, and that I’ll have to walk the last 800 km or so without him. That thought doesn’t make me happy. My sleeping bag was O.K., but in winter I ‘ll need a much warmer one, so also more weight. And sleeping on the floor is not the best preparation for next day’s 25 km. But that we knew already. I still look forward to my hike. I hope Luka and Joep do too.
